Why check every UPI app?

A UPI AutoPay mandate is a standing permission you approve once with your UPI PIN. After that, the merchant can raise debits on the agreed dates, up to the agreed limit. NPCI describes the framework as one where any UPI application has a mandate section for customers to create, approve, modify, pause and revoke these permissions.

The catch is that each app shows only the mandates approved through it. If you set up a music plan in one app and a gym in another, neither list shows the full picture. So the check has to be done app by app. The guide on finding every auto-debit covers the other places recurring payments hide, such as cards and app stores. This guide is the step-by-step for the UPI apps.

Where does each app keep its mandates?

Menu names change between app versions, so treat these as the usual place to look and search the app if a label differs.

App Where to look Actions you can expect
Google Pay Profile picture, then Autopay View live mandates, pause, cancel
PhonePe Profile picture, then AutoPay under payment management View, remove; check the app for pause
Paytm Profile, then UPI and payment settings, then automatic payments View, pause, cancel
BHIM Mandates or recurring payments section View, modify, pause, revoke

How do I check and cancel in Google Pay?

Google's help centre describes the route.

  1. Open Google Pay and tap your profile picture at the top.
  2. Choose Autopay.
  3. Open the Live tab to see active mandates.
  4. Tap the mandate, choose cancel autopay and enter your UPI PIN.
  5. Check that the mandate has moved out of the Live list.

Google also notes that you get a notification before a debit and can pause or cancel from it. If Autopay is missing, update the app. Mandates for some loans cannot be cancelled in the app, and you are asked to contact the merchant.

How do I check and cancel in PhonePe?

PhonePe's help page describes this path.

  1. Open PhonePe and tap your profile picture on the home screen.
  2. Under payment management, tap AutoPay.
  3. Select the mandate you want to stop and tap remove AutoPay.
  4. Confirm with your UPI PIN.

The help page also says you can delete an AutoPay from the merchant's own app or website if the mandate was set up there. Whether a pause option is shown can differ by app version, so look at the options on the mandate screen.

How do I check and cancel in Paytm?

Paytm describes managing mandates, including pause, resume and delete, in its guide on UPI AutoPay.

  1. Open Paytm and tap your profile.
  2. Go to UPI and payment settings.
  3. Open automatic payments.
  4. Select the mandate and choose pause or cancel.
  5. Authorise with your UPI PIN.

Paytm's own wording and layout may differ between versions, so use the search in the app if the path has moved.

How do I check and cancel in BHIM?

NPCI, which runs UPI and the BHIM app, describes a mandate section in UPI apps where you can view and manage mandates. In BHIM, look under a section named mandates or recurring payments. Open the mandate, choose the action you want, such as pause or revoke, and authorise with your UPI PIN. If you use a bank's UPI app, such as a BHIM-based bank app, the same section is usually inside it, so check that app too.

What should I do before I cancel?

Work in this order so you do not lose a service you still need or pay twice.

  1. Decide what the payment is for. Is it an optional subscription, or something like a loan EMI, an insurance premium or a SIP?
  2. For optional services, end the service with the merchant. Many merchants have a cancel option in their own app.
  3. Revoke or pause the mandate in the UPI app where it lives.
  4. Wait for the confirmation and note the date.
  5. Check the next statement to see that no debit arrives.

For an EMI or a premium, ending the mandate does not end the obligation. A missed EMI can bring charges, and a missed premium can lapse a policy. If you want to stop the mandate, arrange another way to pay first.

How does one household's list look? A worked example

Say a household checks four apps and finds five active mandates.

App Mandate Amount (₹) Frequency Monthly equivalent (₹) Yearly (₹)
Google Pay Music plan 119 Monthly 119.00 1,428
PhonePe Streaming plan 499 Monthly 499.00 5,988
Paytm Gym 3,000 Quarterly 1,000.00 12,000
BHIM SIP 5,000 Monthly 5,000.00 60,000
Google Pay Insurance premium 18,400 Yearly 1,533.33 18,400

Monthly total: 119 + 499 = 618. 618 + 1,000 = 1,618. 1,618 + 5,000 = 6,618. 6,618 + 1,533.33 = 8,151.33.

Yearly total: 1,428 + 5,988 = 7,416. 7,416 + 12,000 = 19,416. 19,416 + 60,000 = 79,416. 79,416 + 18,400 = 97,816.

Check: ₹8,151.33 × 12 = ₹97,816 (to the rupee).

The household had thought of its subscriptions as a few hundred rupees. The list shows ₹618 a month for the two streaming and music plans, ₹1,000 for the gym, and two larger items, a SIP and a premium, that are commitments of a different kind. Seeing them in one table lets the family decide which to keep. The table does not make that decision.

What do people miss?

  • A second or third app. An old phone or a bank's own UPI app may hold mandates.
  • Cancelling only in the merchant's app. Check the UPI app too, because the mandate may still show as active.
  • Revoking and expecting a refund. Past debits stay as they are. Contact the merchant or your bank for a disputed charge.
  • Missing the pre-debit notice. Banks send a notice before an AutoPay debit. Turn on notifications so you see it.
  • Revoking a mandate you needed. For premiums and EMIs, plan the replacement payment first.
  • Closing an app or a UPI ID with live mandates. Google Pay asks you to revoke live mandates before closing the account or deleting a UPI ID.

What to check for your own situation

  • Which UPI apps have I ever used, including bank apps?
  • Does each app's mandate list match my bank statement?
  • Which mandates are optional services, and which are EMIs, premiums or investments?
  • Have I ended the service with the merchant as well?
  • When will I check the next statement for a stray debit?

How this looks in Kubear

Kubear is a web app that holds bills and subscriptions as records with an amount, a frequency and a due date, and shows the monthly and yearly equivalents. It does not read SMS or connect to UPI apps or banks, so you enter items or upload a statement, review the draft and confirm. It shows your list and the arithmetic. It does not cancel anything for you.
