Modern Cyber Fraud in India
Financial cyber fraud has evolved far beyond obvious lottery emails into sophisticated social engineering:
1. Fake Utility Disconnection Notices: Urgent SMS threats to cut off electricity or FASTag.
2. The Malicious APK Download: Asking you to install an '.apk' file over WhatsApp that intercepts OTPs in the background.
3. The 'Receive Payment' QR Code Scam: Sending a QR code to "receive OLX buyer money" - scanning it and entering your PIN transfers your money to the scammer.
The 3 Hard Rules of Digital Defense:
- Rule 1: UPI PIN is ONLY for Paying: You NEVER need to enter a UPI PIN or scan a QR code to receive money.
- Rule 2: Lower Daily Limits: In your net banking portal, reduce your daily IMPS/UPI limit to ₹25,000. Increase it temporarily only when making a major planned payment.
- Rule 3: Dial 1930 Within 2 Hours: If scammed, call 1930 (Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre) immediately. If reported within 2 hours, the portal freezes the transaction across downstream beneficiary bank nodes.
