How to track UPI, card and cash spends without SMS reading

You do not have to let an app read your messages. Here are three ways to track spends, and the trade-offs.

Short answer

You can track UPI, card and cash spends without SMS access by adding them yourself: type or say a spend, upload a statement, or photograph a receipt. Example: "paid 120 chai" becomes a ₹120 draft. In Kubear you check the draft, then save. Nothing is saved until you confirm.

Can I track spending without linking my bank?

Yes. Linking a bank is one way to get entries. It is not the only way. You can also add entries yourself, or load them from a statement your bank already gives you. These need no message permission.

How do I add a UPI, card or cash spend in Kubear?

Open Chat and type or say what happened, in English or Hinglish. For example: "paid 120 chai". Kubear writes a draft with the amount and a category. You check it and fix anything wrong, then save. Voice uses your browser's or phone's speech recognition.

Cash works the same way as UPI or card, because you are the source of the entry. The draft is a draft until you confirm it. If your phone is offline, the entry waits as pending. Pending is not saved.

Can I upload a bank statement instead of typing?

Yes. Upload a bank statement as a PDF or Excel file (.xlsx). Kubear reads it into a list of drafts. You can change an amount or category, or untick a line, before anything is saved. Kubear checks lines against what you already saved, to avoid adding the same spend twice from overlapping statements.

If the PDF is locked, it is unlocked on your device. The unlocked content is then read by an AI service, Claude by Anthropic, to make the draft. AI can make mistakes, so the review step matters. The file you upload for reading is deleted after each reading attempt.

What about a receipt or a bill?

Take a photo or pick a file. Kubear reads it into a draft: the shop, the amount and the date. You check it before it saves. For help with a month of statements, see how to turn a bank statement into an expense list.

What are the trade-offs?

Way to addWhat you doWhat you give up
Type or say itOne short line per spendYou have to remember to add it
Upload a statementUpload a file, review the listYou upload each time; nothing syncs by itself
Photo of a receiptTake a photo, check the draftOne receipt at a time

The honest summary: Kubear only knows what you add. A bank-linked or SMS-reading app may catch more spends with less work, but it needs bank consent or message access. Kubear takes the other side of that trade. You add or upload, and you stay in control of what is saved.

Will this work on my iPhone?

Kubear is an Android app on Google Play. There is no iPhone app. You sign in with your mobile number.

A small weekly habit that keeps it complete

Add spends as they happen when you can. Once a week, upload the latest bank statement and clear the drafts. Say you spent ₹120 on chai, ₹450 on a cab and ₹1,800 on groceries: three short lines, or one statement upload, gives the same month. The UPI weekly check-in guide has a five-minute routine for this. To see why SMS reading is not needed, read expense tracking without SMS access.

Once your spends are in, Kubear can show what is left this month. Tap the number to see how it is worked out. Try the maths on your own numbers in the left-this-month calculator.

Questions

Quick answers.

01Does Kubear read my SMS?

No. Kubear does not read your SMS inbox, contacts or call logs. An Android browser may offer to fill your sign-in code from an SMS inside the browser. That is the browser, not Kubear reading your inbox.

02Does Kubear need my bank login?

No. Kubear does not read your SMS and does not ask for your bank login. You add spends, or upload a statement you already have.

03Will my spends appear on their own?

No. Nothing syncs by itself. You add each spend or upload a statement. This is the trade-off for not giving message access.

04Which files can I upload?

A bank statement as a PDF or Excel (.xlsx) file, a receipt as a photo or file, and an insurance policy as a PDF or photo. Older .xls files are not supported.

05Who reads my uploaded statement?

An AI service, Claude by Anthropic, reads bank, receipt and policy files to make a draft. It may process them outside India. Kubear deletes its temporary copy after every attempt. You check the draft before it saves.

06Can I use Kubear on iPhone?

No. Kubear is an Android app on Google Play. There is no iPhone app.
