How 'No-Cost' EMI Actually Works

In 2013, the Reserve Bank of India mandated that all loans must explicitly charge interest. To offer 'No-Cost EMI', e-commerce portals use a discount offset:

1. You buy a phone for ₹50,000 on a 6-month EMI at 15% interest.

2. Total interest would be ₹2,200.

3. The retailer reduces the invoice price upfront to ₹47,800.

4. The bank charges you ₹47,800 + ₹2,200 interest = ₹50,000.

The 3 Hidden Costs You Still Pay:

  • 18% GST on the Interest Component: Even though the interest is offset by the merchant discount, the Indian government charges 18% GST on that ₹2,200 interest = ₹396.
  • Bank Processing Fee: Most banks charge a non-refundable ₹199 + 18% GST = ₹235.
  • Lost Cash/Card Discounts: Upfront full payment often gets instant 5–10% bank discounts that EMI options forfeit.
